6 TIPS FOR HEALTHY HOLIDAY SKIN
To support you at this crazy time known as Christmas, here are 6 top tips to get you through with Healthy Holiday Skin.
A non-negotiable no-brainer for summer and healthy holiday skin. It should be a broad spectrum sunscreen, meaning it protects from both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are the ones that burn the skin (think B for Burn). UVA rays are the ones that travel down a little further to the lower levels of the skin causing damage to the cells, and destroying collagen and elastin. These are present from the moment daylight appears, until the sun sets again. The SPF rating is a measurable unit. One unit is equal to the time it takes for your skin to go red. For example, if it takes your skin 10 minutes to redden when exposed to the sun, then SPF 30 gives you 30 x 10 minutes before you will burn. It’s important to re-apply your sunscreen at least every two hours, and of course wear protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses!
Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, which research shows can reduce or delay the negative effects of UV radiation on skin and support damage repair. Include plenty of these in your diet to give your body what it needs to do this effectively. Two fruit and five veg is the recommended minimum.
2. Cleanse that skin!
Cleansing is another non-negotiable step which is vital to remove any traces of make-up or sunscreen. Never leave your makeup on overnight, even after a big night out. Give your skin the support it needs by performing a double cleanse at night (the first cleanse just removes the surface junk, the second flushes out the debris from the follicles). Always take your travel kit of products!
Avoid or reduce processed foods, sugar, alcohol and coffee as these foods are generally devoid of nutrients and can cause problems for your skin.
3. Drink Water.
And lots of it! Although water indirectly helps with hydrating the skin, it plays a major role in assisting enzymes in the body to do their thing. For the surface of the skin particularly, this means the bonds that hold the skin cells together are able to break down in a normal manner, and allow the excess cell build up to slough away helping to smooth the skin. A good way to make sure you are drinking enough water is to make it more interesting. Try adding frozen berries, cucumber, mint, lime, or lemon and ginger. All very refreshing on a hot day.

5. Get your good share of Anti-oxidants, both internally and externally!
Nothing says aged (think sultana/prune/sundried tomatoes) like skin that hasn’t been exfoliated! We want juicy grapes/plums/tomatoes full of life. And don’t forget to replenish with moisturiser to lock in the hydration.
Foods containing good fats are also great for your skin so include olive oil, avocado, and nuts and seeds in your diet.
6. And best of all, get some good quality sleep.
Burning (both your skin, and the candle at both ends) creates free-radicals which oxidise your body – much like corroded metal does not support your healthy holiday skin.
