What is Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)

What is Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)

What is Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) and what can it do for my skin?

What is Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)

Collagen Induction Therapy is also known as Medical Micro-needling, Aesthetic Needling or Medical Needling. It is a specialised technique used to stimulate new collagen production, effectively tightening the skin and minimising fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen Induction Therapy is scientifically proven to target the cells that are responsible for producing collagen and elastin, increase capillary strength and growth factors which will see your skin improve after every treatment. This is achieved by producing microscopic channels in the epidermis/dermis to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process by instigating the regeneration of your skin cells.

It also encourages the formation of collagen and elastin to improve the overall structure, function and appearance of the treatment area. All of this with little to no downtime!

What areas of the body are suitable for CIT?

Because of the variable needle depths of the Exceed Collagen Induction Therapy device, it can be used on most body parts, including the face, neck, décolletage, hands, stomach, legs and arms.

Can I have these treatments all year round?

These treatments can be performed all year round, however, when the UV index is higher during summer extra care and protection from the sun needs to be considered. Our thoughts are that it is in your best interest to commence your treatment programme during the cooler months for your comfort and protection as the new collagen fibres are especially sensitive to UV damage.

Do I need to stay out of the sun after Collagen Induction Therapy?

YES, YES and YES… UV exposure is the fastest way to prematurely age your skin and will also undermine your Exceed CIT treatments.  Protect your investment and ensure your treatment sites are protected ALL year-round.

Is there a period of downtime after my treatment?

Transient to strong redness can occur after a CIT treatment, usually evident for 2 – 12 hours but there is no effective downtime as with heat-related ablative treatments such as laser resurfacing. We recommend you have your treatments at the end of the day to protect your skin from UV damage, and to keep the skin cool.

What skincare should I be using leading up to my treatment?

We suggest Dermaviduals corneotherapeutic skin care (totally respecting the barrier function), to ensure best results pre and post derma CIT.  A big, unpredictable risk can be the skincare products used post CIT. Most skin care lines have not been formulated with Collagen Induction Therapy in mind and not all skincare actually cares for the skin!

It is essential to use products free of sensitising ingredients such as fragrances, preservatives, parabens, emulsifiers, colours, mineral oils, silicones and amines. Dermaviduals has been created with CIT in mind and is the most highly recommended dermatological skincare range to be used before, during and after derma CIT treatments. These products have their own potent delivery system and we are not using CIT treatments to penetrate products further into the skin, unlike product lines that don’t have potent delivery systems.

What about sunscreen and makeup after my treatment?

We recommend waiting until at least 12 – 24 hours to apply sunscreen or makeup. You may also resume your normal makeup regimen the day after your derma CIT treatment.

How many Collagen Induction treatments are recommended?

Each person’s skin conditions are different and require different levels of treatment. The number of treatments will be determined by your skin condition, skin goals (i.e. minimise fine lines) and also by the health of your skin, which makes it super important to prepare your skin prior to your first derma CIT treatment.

How often do I need to have Collagen Induction Treatments?

Following recommended protocols, 3 to 5 treatments performed every 6-8 weeks are recommended to achieve optimal outcomes. You will then be given a maintenance plan to sustain your results. To maintain your results and keep your skin performing its best, it is recommended that you have 2 booster treatments per year after your initial course of treatments. It is also very important that you continue CIT at home to enhance your results. We recommend MTS-Rollers.

Will I need topical Anaesthetic during my Collagen Induction Treatment?

No. The Exceed CIT device has been designed with your comfort in mind. The device has a motor that enables the insertion of the needles at such an incredibly fast speed such that it tricks the pain receptors. We have been educated and certified with a technique that enables you to have a comfortable treatment without the need for anaesthetic. Everyone’s tolerance for pain is different, but the precision of the Exceed CIT means that your treatments are comfortable plus your skin treatment therapist can adjust the depth of the treatment to further support your comfort and of course ensure the best results at all times.

Topical Anaesthetic is not recommended as it constricts the blood vessels. This masks the visual clues as to the depth the treatment is being performed. There is absolutely no need for a treatment to go beyond the cells it is targeting.

Are there Contraindications?

As with any treatment, there are always contraindications and precautions that should be taken into consideration before proceeding. Your skin treatment therapist will go through a detailed evaluation to ensure the treatment will be safe and effective for you. Be honest in this evaluation, for your own benefit.

The following will be approached with precaution by your skin treatment therapist:

  • Some medications and supplements
  • Keloid or raised scarring
  • History of eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions
  • History of actinic (solar) keratosis
  • History of Herpes Simplex infections
  • History of diabetes
  • Presence of raised moles, warts or lesions (in the treatment area)
  • Pregnancy (Safe to conduct CIT – however, no topical anaesthetic can be used)
  • Recent sun exposure

Absolute contraindications include but are not limited to:

  • Treatment with Roaccutane within the past 12 months
  • Scleroderma (connective tissue disease)
  • Collagen vascular diseases
  • Autoimmune diseases & immuno-suppression
  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Active bacterial or fungal infection (in the treatment area)
  • Active acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions (in the treatment area)
  • Skin cancers (in the treatment area)
  • Scars less than 6 months old (in the treatment area)
  • Facial fillers in the past 2 weeks (in the treatment area)
  • Botox in the past 10 days (in the treatment area)
  • Other skin rejuvenation modalities used such as Laser, IPL, Fraxel etc. in the past 10-14 days (in the treatment area.

Can CIT damage my skin?

Absolutely not. Collagen Induction Therapy creates deliberate, controlled trauma stimulating the natural physiological healing process. The medical-grade stainless steel needles operate at a highly effective speed to enable the device operator to trigger a protective healing response. The tiny micro-channels close within minutes and your skins protective upper layers remain uncompromised.

As a derma CIT skin treatment therapists, I have undertaken mandatory specialist training and education to ensure safe and effective treatment application using our Exceed CIT device.

Your safety is our top priority. The Exceed CIT device has been designed using patented technology to prevent cross-contamination. The single-use (disposable) stainless steel needles are medical-grade, and 100% sterile. Cutting-edge technology ensures there is no compromise to your safety. We also provide disposable plastic pen sleeves as an extra measure of protection.

What does it feel like?

The rapid needle motion provides an experience that patients describe as a mild sandpaper-like sensation. Variable needle depths allow for the customisation of treatments to suit individual conditions.

How long until I see results?

Visible results are evident between 5 to 8 weeks post your derma CIT treatment. However one of the most exciting things about CIT is that your results will continue to improve over the next 12 months as the new collagen and elastin settles, strengthens and rejuvenates your skin from within.

Results will vary from person to person, but to give your skin the best results, the correct topical skincare and correct nutrition prior to the commencement of your course of CIT is vital.
